Tash's Movement Recordings rounds out the summer season by welcoming Alex O'Rion back to the label for a new EP. Rising out of a successful career as a trance producer, Dutch artist Alex O'Rion took inspiration from the likes of John Digweed, Nick Warren and Sasha, to forge a path into the world of progressive house. Alex's groovy melodic sound found its footing quickly thereafter, as he notched releases via Nick Warren's Hope Recordings and Hernan Cattaneo's Sudbeat Music. Moving forward, 2020 proved to be a breakout year for the Nijkerk resident. On the strength of projects for Replug and The Soundgarden, Alex rose to Beatport's #3 best-selling progressive house producer, paving the way for 2021 releases via Guy J's Lost and Found and UK behemoth Anjunabeats. Also, no stranger to Movement Recordings, Alex made his label debut in 2020 with the well received 'Blue' EP, before going on to remix LADS in 2021. Now returning for a second original project, Alex presents 'Relic', alongside remixes from Simos Tagias and Auditoria.
Title track 'Relic' sets the tone for the release with warm, chunky grooves providing the backbone for carnival-like motifs and shape-shifting atmospheres to work their magic. A prophetic blend of melody and texture highlights the break as Alex re-affirms his ability to captivate a dance floor, as off kilter percussion and a wave of noise melt down into a groove-centric drop. The companion piece 'Drift' finds Alex exploring shadowy monochromes, a brooding exchange of atmosphere and rhythm where themes of isolation, introspection and hope get translated by somber tones, foreboding effects and voluptuous grooves.
Returning to the label and providing the lone interpretation of 'Relic' is Simos Tagias. Since first emerging nearly a decade ago, the Greek artist has continued to earn the praise of progressive music tastemakers Cid Inc, Guy J, Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren. Revered imprints such as Higher States, Juicebox Music, Mango Alley, meanwhile, Proton Music, Replug and Sudbeat have all served as recent landing spots for his groovy melodic sound. Now, on the strength of his 'Mattel' EP, Simos returns to Movement with a powerful take on 'Relic'. Taking inspiration from the original, Simos adds his own blend of atmosphere and texture to Alex's distinctive themes, resulting in a version that should find favour with even the most discerning progressive house aficionados.
The release concludes with Auditoria making his label debut with the lone interpretation of 'Drift'. Following on from two chart topping releases for Freegrant Music, Auditoria delivers his first ever remix here, as spongy kick drums and wintry qualities lead to electrified iterations of new age sonics. Thumping grooves underpin a fascinating blend of disorientating projections, before segueing into a finale of soundscape science. It rounds out a welcome return to Movement Recordings for Alex O'Rion, an artist who furthers his place amongst the world's finest progressive house producers with 'Relic'.
